Since the dawn of the digital age, identity theft continues to be a reality that poses challenges that are detrimental to one’s financial security and overall privacy. In 2019, 3.2 million identity theft and fraud reports were received—most of these complaints involved money being lost. At least 1 out of 10 people have now been victims of identity theft and anyone with a Social Security number can be a primary target. The harsh truth is, identity theft is the fastest-growing crime that the country faces today.
Speaking with Dubb founder Ruben Dua, Dana Mantilia, founder of Identity Protection Planning, educates us on the dangers of identity theft and on how to be safe from falling into its trap. Identity Protection Planning has been offering small and large organizations with protection services for two years. Some of their services include credit monitoring, dark web scans for personal information, and a million-dollar insurance policy.
In this episode of Connection Loop, Dana discusses the common fraud tactics done by criminals on cyberspace and how we can identify them. Child identity thefts are the most prominent, but adults are not off the hook. We may feel safe with what we think are complicated passwords, but the continuous advancement of technology makes cybercrime easier for criminals. Dana advocates for awareness on these issues and gives us precautionary measures like practicing proper password management, vigilant credit monitoring, and extreme cautiousness when signing up for services on any platform.
